Meet Belynda Sim, a dedicated volunteer who has spent over 20 years bringing joy to the elderly at BHEH. As the Entertainment Lead and committee member, she plans fun activities, sings to residents, and helps make them feel safe, heard and at home. Her love for the elderly keeps her coming back every month, even during the pandemic. Whether it’s dancing, singing or just listening, Belynda is always ready to brighten someone’s day.
Evergreen: Hi! Could you start by telling us your name and how long you’ve been volunteering with us?
I’m Belynda Sim. I’ve been volunteering at BHEH for about 20 years now—time really flies when you’re doing something you love!
Evergreen: That’s amazing! What’s your role at the Home?
I’m the Entertainment Lead and part of the committee here. I help plan and run various activities to bring joy to our elderly residents.
Evergreen: That sounds so meaningful. What motivates you to keep coming back after all these years?
I’ve always had a deep love and respect for the elderly. Many of them have been through so much in life, and it’s heartbreaking to see them in a nursing home—not because they want to be, but because of life circumstances. I just want to make their days a little brighter.

Evergreen: What values guide the way you care for them?
For me, it’s about helping them feel comfortable, safe and at peace—as if they’re at home, not in a hospital. I want them to feel that life is still worth living, that there’s still joy to look forward to, even if they’re unwell.
Evergreen: How do you usually spend your free time? Any hobbies or hidden talents?
Honestly, volunteering is how I spend most of my free time! I’ve been doing this since 2003. Every Saturday, I go to different homes for ward-to-ward singing performances. On weekdays, I volunteer at other agencies!

Evergreen: How do you make sure the residents feel safe and respected during activities or outings?
We’re always careful when moving residents, especially in wheelchairs. We look out for slopes, uneven ground—safety comes first. And we always have a backup plan just in case. When it comes to food, we choose soft, easy-to-chew items they can enjoy. Most importantly, we listen. They have thoughts, feelings, opinions—just like anyone else. It’s our job to make sure they feel heard and respected, while still working within the home’s guidelines.
Evergreen: If you could bring in any therapy animal, what would it be and why?
Definitely dogs. They’re such intuitive creatures. Even though they can’t speak, they seem to understand us well!
